Bluecity Solution Implemented In Helsinki For C-ITS Application To Increase Safety
Bluecity’s technology was chosen to capture and analyze traffic data in the development of a C-ITS solution in Helsinki, in partnership with Nodeon Finland. The project aimed to collect multimodal traffic data and alert car users of imminent collisions.
During the summer and fall 2021, Nodeon Finland tested Bluecity’s 3D lidar and Edge AI at three intersections as part of the Forum Virium Helsinki and Helsinki City Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab project, which supports the experimentation of new intelligent transport innovations.
The solution was used to automatically detect cyclists approaching crosswalks at high speed as well as pedestrians crossing the intersection.
To improve traffic safety, the system warned approaching vehicles of imminent collision situations via instant messages. Messages were received on a smartphone that acted a s navigation system and was also displayed on the dashboard for newer cars.
Bluecity’s 3D lidar and Edge AI solution provided accurate traffic count data with an average counting accuracy of 97%.
The solution provided traffic count data, classification data, trajectories and speed analysis as well as near collision analytics.
One lidar was needed to cover all approaching directions with a diameter of 40 to 60 meters.
The most typical near collision situations were due to last-minute disorganized movement by cyclists and e-scooter, motorists, cyclists and e-scooters running red lights, and jaywalking.
